Abstract

To put it simply, two shafts are misaligned when their center lines do not coincide. We can distinguish parallel and angular misalignment, but most of the time, a combination of the two happens in real life. When two misalignmed shafts are joined together by a coupling, the machine structure, but mostly the coupling itself, is subjected to deformation or strain. But this strain is not constant, but changes with the angle of rotation. The varying strain causes varying stress which results in varying forces at the coupling.
